He was challenging the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., the world's finest boxer and a super welterweight title-holder, when he was still a lightweight.

Mostly, though, his cries have fallen on deaf ears. While he's sought the likes of Mayweather, Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao, he's gotten decidedly less sexy names like Joel Casamayor, Vicente Escobedo, Michael Katsidis and Selcuk Aydin.

NABO junior welterweight champion Karim Mayfield wanted his HBO debut to be memorable.He achieved his goal, overwhelming Mauricio Herrera en route to a unanimous decision Saturday night on the Thomas Dulorme-Luis Carlos Abregu undercard at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y.

The three judges scored the fight for Mayfield, 96-94, 98-92 and 97-93. Mayfield also won the fight, 98-92, on ESPN.com's scorecard.

Through much of the fight, Mayfield found Herrera's chin with hard overhand rights. In the latter rounds, Mayfield forced Herrera against the ropes where he controlled the action inside.
